Choosing a rug
Wool is hard-wearing and ages well. Jute adds lovely texture but can shed and is harder to clean if it gets wet. In a living room, choose a size that lets at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on the rug.

Warm, calm lighting
Check the bulb fitting (such as E27 or E14) and whether a bulb is included. For a warm glow at home I look for LED bulbs around 2700K. A shade in linen, rattan or paper changes the whole feel of a room.

Cleaner-burning candles
Look for plant-based waxes such as soy or rapeseed, cotton or wooden wicks, and brands that are clear about their fragrance. Trim the wick to around 5mm before each burn so it burns more cleanly and lasts longer.
