Dining Tables
My edit of sustainable dining tables in the UK, in solid wood, reclaimed timber and natural finishes. Solid wood can be sanded and refinished over the years, which is why I lean towards it for a piece that gets used every day. My guide to natural wood finishes explains the difference between oiled and lacquered tops. Check each retailer’s own details before you buy.

Buying a sustainable dining table: what I look for
A dining table gets used every day for years, so I choose one that can be repaired rather than replaced.
- Solid or reclaimed wood, which can be sanded and refinished when it marks.
- A practical finish: oil is easy to touch up, while lacquer resists spills but is harder to repair.
- Sturdy construction: check the legs and frame, especially on extending tables.
- The right size: allow roughly 60cm of table length per person and space to pull chairs out.
Common questions
Round or rectangular?
Round tables suit smaller rooms and conversation; rectangular tables seat more people along a wall.
Is an extending table worth it?
If you host a few times a year, yes. Check how the extension is stored and how easy it is to use.
